Preserve the account

  • Who supplied the story, and when?
  • What did they witness themselves?
  • What had they heard from someone else?
  • Which documents or photographs support the account?
  • Are there different versions or details still to check?

Ask about ordinary life

What work filled a typical day? Which places mattered? What food, songs, expressions, celebrations, or household customs do they remember? Ask open questions and allow the speaker to describe what they consider important.

Keep the record usable

  • Give files a clear name and retain the original version.
  • Record where physical originals are held.
  • Keep a second copy in a separate location.
  • Note permission and any limits on sharing.
  • Write down the next question or person to consult.
